How to Plan a Burial at Sea in Florida: A Step-by-Step Family Guide

Back to all postsSeptember 24, 2026

Losing someone you love is one of the hardest things a family goes through. When that person had a deep connection to the ocean, a burial at sea can feel like exactly the right way to say goodbye.

Is Burial at Sea Legal in Florida?

Yes. Burial at sea is completely legal in Florida, provided it is performed at least 3 nautical miles from shore. This is the federal EPA requirement. At Ashes at Sea Florida, every ceremony is performed at a minimum of 3 nautical miles offshore. After the ceremony, families receive the exact GPS coordinates of the scattering location.

Step 1 — Choose Your Service Type

A non-attended service ($425) is performed privately by Captain Brad, without family members present. An attended ceremony ($550) allows up to 3 family members to be present aboard the vessel with Captain Brad. Additional guests are $50 each. Both services include flower petals scattered alongside the ashes and GPS coordinates provided after.

Step 2 — What Happens During the Ceremony

Captain Brad travels at least 3 nautical miles offshore. The ashes are scattered into the ocean alongside flower petals. For attended services, family members are welcome to speak, play music, or simply be present. After the ceremony, you receive the GPS coordinates and a certificate of scattering.

Step 3 — EPA Requirements

The key federal requirement is simple: the scattering must occur at least 3 nautical miles from shore. Ashes at Sea Florida always exceeds this minimum. You are also required to notify the EPA within 30 days — Ashes at Sea Florida handles this notification on your behalf.

Step 4 — Prepare the Cremated Remains

Cremated remains need to be in a container that can be transported safely. For non-attended services, you can ship the remains directly to us or drop them off in person at our New Smyrna Beach location.

Step 5 — Book Your Ceremony

Ashes at Sea Florida is available 7 days a week, from 7 am to 9 pm. To book, visit our booking page online or call Captain Brad directly at (386) 401-9900. We serve all of Central Florida from New Smyrna Beach.
