When families start researching burial at sea in Florida, they often have the same questions. Here are the five questions Captain Brad hears most often, answered plainly.
1. Is It Legal to Scatter Ashes at Sea in Florida?
Yes. Burial at sea is completely legal in Florida. The federal EPA requirement is that the scattering must occur at least 3 nautical miles from shore. Ashes at Sea Florida always meets and exceeds this requirement. After the ceremony, the EPA requires notification within 30 days — Ashes at Sea Florida handles this paperwork on your behalf.
2. What Actually Happens During the Ceremony?
A dignified, respectful ceremony at sea, led personally by Captain Brad. Before the ceremony, you book online or by phone and choose your service type. During the ceremony, Captain Brad travels at least 3 nautical miles offshore. The ashes are scattered into the ocean alongside flower petals. For attended ceremonies, family members are welcome to speak, play music, or simply be there. After the ceremony, you receive the exact GPS coordinates and a certificate of scattering.
3. Do I Have to Be There?
No. A non-attended service is a popular and meaningful option. With a non-attended service ($425), Captain Brad performs the ceremony privately. You ship or drop off the cremated remains, and he handles everything. After the ceremony, you receive GPS coordinates and a certificate of scattering. If you want to be present, the attended ceremony ($550) allows up to 3 family members aboard, with additional guests at $50 each.
4. How Far Offshore Do You Go?
At least 3 nautical miles — and the exact location is recorded. The EPA requires a minimum of 3 nautical miles from shore for burial at sea. After every ceremony, families receive the GPS coordinates of the exact scattering location.
